6 Ways to Go Green in Your Garden for Earth Day

6 Ways to Go Green in Your Garden for Earth Day

Creating an eco-friendlier garden is easy. Try these simple ideas for celebrating Earth Day by creating a more sustainable yard.

  1. Plant a tree or donate a tree.Trees help purify the air, give wildlife a home, and provide shade from the hot summer sun.
  2. Start a compost pile. Composting takes your kitchen scraps, leaves and grass clippings and converts them to nutrient-rich food for your soil. You’ll add less trash to the landfill and make your plants happy in the process.
  3. Plant with a Strategy. Planting drought-resistant plants or using drought-resistant grasses can significantly reduce your watering needs during the warmer months of the year. They also require less maintenance in subsequent months. Furthermore, you should plant flowers and shrubs in strategic positions to reduce run-off so that you won’t waste water during spring lawn care.
  4. Water smartly.Give your garden a drink during the coolest part of the day, so more water has a chance to seep into the ground before it evaporates…and you will save water over the long run.
  5. Reduce the grass in your lawn. Non-grass lawns can be made up of easy-care ground cover plants, wildflowers, stone, pavers and/or other materials. The result? Less work, less watering needed, and less mowing.
  6. Join a local park, river or beach cleanup.

What small step will you take toward a greener garden and earth this spring?
